The horizontally or vertically opposed piston engine has pistons working in the opposite cylinders and coupled to a rotary crankshaft. Only one piston (11) is coupled by a connecting rod (14) to the crankshaft (3), the other one (12) being coupled to the first one directly by a coupling member (18). The latter can be formed by a skirt joining the pistons, guided in the cylinders and with openings for the crankshaft.
