Method for rapid heating of thin separate food products - using microwave field from waveguide that extends across movement path of product to heat it

The method involves placing applicators having waveguides (15) and magnetrons (18) above and below an endless belt on which food products (12) are transported. Both the belt and the food packaging need to be transparent to microwaves. The applicators are arranged such that the standing waves in one are 90 degrees out of phase with the other. During heat treatment of the products, whose thickness should not exceed 10mm, are maintained at a temp. between 50-80 deg.C, for a period of 5 to 60 seconds.
