The turbo-charged engine has a first control valve (V1) between the turbocharger (2) and the inlet, and a second control valve (V2) in a by-pass (7) for the turbine of the exhaust driven turbocharger. The two valves are controlled by a processor which is programmed for optimum emission control and for torque. If the first valve is fully open than additional inlet airflow is generated by closing the second valve, increasing the turbocharger power. If the air-flow is to be reduced, the control is via the second valve, until it is fully open, from which point the first valve takes over. The function of the two valves is progressively controlled. ADVANTAGE - No sudden changes in engine function; continuous emission control.
