The elongate light conductor in the form of a glass rod, or an optical fibre rod, is formed integral with the dental handpiece (1) by moulding it to match the shape of the handpiece (1) by incorporation in a sintered block which is then embedded in teh handpiece (1). Pref. the light conductor (6) has a circular, oral, or rectangular cross-section, the end surface of the light conductor (6) being mirrored via an applied coating or via optical polishing. The cross-section of the light conductor (6) may vary along its length its distal end bent at an angle to direct the light outwards and downwards onto the tooth. ADVANTAGE - Protects light guide from damage.
