ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREAdhesive compositions for bonding EPDM elastomerscomprise (a) a neutralized sulfonated EPDM elastomericterpolymer; (b) an organic hydrocarbon solvent; (c) anionic plasticizer or mixture of ionic plasticizers; (d) aphenolic hydrocarbon resin or mixture of phenolichydrocarbon resins and (e) a material selected frommineral oils, petroleum oils, polybutenes, polyisobutylenesand ethylene/propylene copolymers. Such adhesivecompositions are particularly suitable for bonding sheetsof black EPDM, especially sheets of cured black EPDM,elastomeric membranes together and may also be utilized tobond sheets of cured black EPDM to other uncuredelastomers and to non-elastomeric substrates as well.The adhesive compositions by proper selection ofthe component (e) material and the addition of a colorpigment or dye thereto may also be used to bond coloredEPDM elastomers such as white, blue, yellow, green, etc.An adhesive composition for bonding sheets ofEPDM elastomeric roofing membrane in cases where themembrane is to be anchored to the roof surface bymechanical systems will further contain a hydrophobicsilica.
