ARTICLE, TEST KIT AND SANDWICH ASSAY FOR THE DETECTION OF BACTEROIDES, INTERMEDIUS, BACTEROIDES GINGIVALIS OR ACTINOBACILLUS ACTINOMYCETEMCOMITANS One or more serotypes of any of the microorganisms Bacteroides intermedius, Bacteroides gingivalis and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans can be sensitively and selectively detected in a sandwich assay. This method comprises contacting a specimen containing antigen extracted from the microorganism with a microporous membrane having reactive antibodies affixed thereto as a water-insoluble reagent, and contacting the same antigen with detectably labeled antibodies thereby forming a immunological sandwich complex bound to the membrane. After unbound materials are washed away, the bound complex can be appropriately detected. The water-insoluble reagent is composed of particles to which the antibodies are bound. The particles are substantially on the surface of the membrane as opposed to being embedded therein. This assay enables detection of the microorganism without significant cross-reactivity with related organisms.
