The invention relates to a welding element which is consumed during welding for arc welding. The element has a steel sheath (12) enclosing a compact or compacted core containing metal-alloy powder (20) and an essentially 100% basic compound in an amount of less than about 1.6% by weight. Said basic compound consists of calcium-fluoride powder (22) in a proportion preferably in the region of about 0.1% to 0.9% of the total weight of the welding element. According to a further feature of the invention, the core material furthermore contains a special agent (24) for reducing the amount of diffusible hydrogen in the welding metal. The welding element according to the invention can be used as filling or added metal for TIG welding. Preferably, it is used as consumable electrode in MIG welding. IMAGE
