An ironing machine is fitted with an ironing roller which can be driven by a drive motor and which co-operates with an ironing head which can be driven by a lifting motor toward or away from the ironing roller, and a switching device with a switch for switching the two motors on and off. The end position of the lifting motor which drives the ironing head can be determined by at least one end switch. To extend the range of functions of the ironing machine and to simplify its operation, the switching device has a switch rocker (169) with a switching element (191) which can be actuated in two different axes of motion. The actuating element of the switch (170) for the lifting motor (93) is arranged in one path of motion of the switching element and the actuating elements of two switches (171, 172) which determine the direction of rotation of the drive motor (34) for the ironing roller (10) are arranged in the other path of motion.
