The invention relates to a method for recording and identifying bus attachments in a 1-master, n-slave system. The bus attachments are connected in a topological ring arrangement into the system and are recorded and identified after an initialisation phase and ring synchronisation by means of a configuration cycle. The number of address bytes, which can be set through a hardware-implemented routine to a maximum of 4 bytes in the case of unintelligent attachments, is recorded in the configuration telegram. If intelligent attachments with a variable number of data bytes are present in the system, 4 bytes are reserved in the first configuration cycle for each intelligent attachment. At the end of the first configuration cycle, an exact replica of the position and number of the attachments, their relative address and their identity is present in the central control system. The intelligent attachments present in the system activate a second configuration cycle, in whose telegram the absolute address of each attachment, calculated by the central control system, is located, which address is then recorded in the general register of all attachments.
