gas detectors which are provided with a thin chemosensitive layer made of monomeric phthalocyanines have the defect of change of conductivity depending on humidity, thus limiting their scope. The method of the present invention provides polymeric layers of the general formula (XMO) n based on a phthalocyanine or a '' similar structure '' as defined by the invention, namely a compound, wherein X is a phthalocyanine or similar structure, M represents an element selected from group 4 or 5 of the periodic table or from transition elements, O is oxygen, n is an integer and Y is halogen, is (a) XMY2 depositing the compound on a substrate and (b) subjecting the XMY2 compound to hydrolysis and then to a heat treatment. These layers are sensitive to organic and inorganic compounds and have the advantage that one can use (PcSiO) n at different humidity levels. These compounds are useful especially for the environmental control and déctection explosives.
