A process for the preparation of a hapten of the formula I IMAGE in which hapten is a biologically active substance, PEG is a polyethylene glycol and P is a protein, oligo- or polypeptide, and n is 1 - 4 and m is 1 - 4, is described. The described haptens show no reduction in their immunoreactivity when they are bonded with spacers according to the formula I to the particular labels.
