Refuse compacting apparatus includes a storage body 8, a hopper 34 having a first opening 38 for receiving refuse and a second opening 42 communicating with the storage body 8, the second opening 42 being constructed to define in the hopper 34 an orifice of progressively decreasing dimension with progressive positions towards the storage body 8. Packing panel means 44 movable cyclically in the hopper 34 compact the refuse and pass it after compaction through the second opening 42 in the hopper 34. An ejection panel 12 connected to an hydraulic cylinder 14 is disposed in the storage body 8 and is movable toward or away from the hopper 34. Pressure generated in drive cylinder 50 of the packing panel means 44 controls the dumping of fluid from the cylinder 14 to produce movements of the ejection panel 12 away from the second opening 42 in the hopper 34 in response to the imposition of a particular pressure by the refuse in the storage body 8 against the ejection panel 12.
