In the first stage, pref. acid washing is provided by nozzles (3) oriented in the direction of flow, then the air passes through a dividing wall (4), pref. formed as a droplet separator, into the second stage; here further nozzles (5) provide counter-flow washing, after which the ascending gas passes through a droplet separator (6), then through a condensate separator (7) to leave the vessel. The acid liquid from the first stage is recycled by a pump (9) to the nozzles while the wash liquid accumulating at the bottom of the vessel is oxidised by air jets (10) blown into it. For the washing of crude gases, esp. those polluted with HCl, SO2, HF etc. The arrangement provides two separate washing stages all incorporated into a single vessel.
