Blowing agent gases are expelled from plastic foams by first of all coarsely precomminuting plastic foam to the extent necessary within a closed plant and subsequently transferring it into a compacting plant, in which the foam is worked and pressed with the aid of a reciprocating ram, so that it emerges as a gas-free compact. Blowing gas released during the process sequence is removed by suction and recovered in the liquid state.
