Digital fibre optic telephone and data network - uses high capacity fibre optic, microwave and short wave links with parallel standby facilities

The diagram shows the interconnected telephone and date network of the former West German Republic, which consists of exchange-free interconnection between network access points (NZ1-NZ24). Additionally, a second similar network may be overlayed and interconnected to access points (NZ1-NZ24). Two long distance routes (A, B) and several cross routes (C1-C12) interconnect the access points (NZ1-NZ24) at the nodes (1-24). All routes are fibre-optic links. At each node, a time division multiplexer-demultiplexor and opto-electronic converter are connected to each fibre optic route. Standby routes in parallel with existing routes, and stand-by opti-electronic converters are preferred. USE/ADVANTAGE - High capacity network with redundancy.
