A cigarette making machine has a conveyor belt (1) which operates in conjunction with a vacuum chamber (3) to form tobacco (4) into a continuous rope. The tobacco then passes to a wrapping machine (SE) where it is wrapped in cigarette paper. The wrapped tobacco then passes to a cutting blade (29) where it is cut into separate cigarettes. The drive to the wrapping machine (SE), the drive to the support (31) at the cutting station, and the drive to the cutting blade (29), are all independent of each other. This enables the speeds of the drives to be varied to suit the length of the cigarettes being produced. USE - Cigarette manufacture.
