A method of testing optical backscatter measurement devices or OTDRs involves feeding optical test signals of different magnitudes into the OTDR output via a variable damping element (2) and comparing the OTDR measurements with known test signal data. Reflected signal components transmitted by the OTDR are used as test signals. The optical power of the component passed by the damping element is measured for two damping values by a calibrated optical power meter (4). The OTDR and power meter measurement differences are compared. USE/ADVANTAGE - The accuracy of testing optical backscatter measurement devices is improved with a simple arrangement.
