Scale formed in rolling mills from hot working and heat treatment of steels, partic. oil-contg. scale, is processed by mixing it with burnt lime and then supplying the mixed prod. to an Fe and steel prodn. plant. The quantity of burnt lime added to the scale is less than stoichiometric in relation to the moisture content of the scale. Pref. the mixt. is fed to a steel converter charged with pig iron. ADVANTAGE - Economical method, allowing easy handling of the scale.
