A travelling bed reactor, operating singly or as one of a set in sequence, parallel, or cascade arrangement, treats gas rising through a subdivided filling of free-flowing granular material (5), supplied from a feeder (4) at the head of a shaft (1). Material descends partial shifts (7) each ending in a transverse horizontal plate (9) carrying material at its angle of repose, and each with generally equal flow resistance to gas rising from a bed inlet (2) towards a head outlet (3). The plates are at different levels (e.g. H1, H2, H3) and overlap each other across the shaft width. Granule descent from level to level is provided by vibrating the plates. Different filling levels in he partial shafts (7) derive from different lengths and cross-sections and their supply tubes (6) Spaced trays (13) in rows across the shaft base collect descending granules. USE - Esp. used for effective and uniform gas purificn.
