A proces is claimed for isolating L-phosphinothricin (I) from an aq. reaction mixt. which is obtd. by enzymatic transamination of 4-(hydroxy)(methyl)phosphinyl -2-oxobutyric acid (II) and which contains (I), (II), alpha-ketoglutaric acid (III) and L-glutamic acid (IV), opt. in salt form. The process comprises partially or largely sepg. (I) from (II)-(IV) by electrodialysis at pH 2.5-2.8. (I) is L-2-amino-4-methylphosphinobutyric acid. ADVANTAGE - The process is simpler and gives higher yields than prior art processes (cf. EP249188).
