A cam grinder uses equispaced valve cams (3) per cylinder to form a cam pattern for the shaft (1) as chucked (15), using a tailstock (17) and using collet type holder pairs (8) for the grinding tools (18). The holder pairs are mounted directly via nuts (13) or indirectly via housing (19) to four threaded spindles (9) fixed in the machine frame. The nuts are driven in synchronism off a servomotor (10) to position the holders using holder blocks (20) which each have a maximum number of raster pattern holder pairs to suit the cylinder cams and are each driven individually off the servomotor.
