Device is claimed for holding a glass preform during coating by a vapour deposition process. The device forms a clamp around the glass preform and comprises tapered gripper body, a matching internally tapered chuck and a threaded clamping ring. The gripper body has a hollow centre and radial slots for accepting clamping blades. The chuck also has a hollow centre and has slots in the body for observing the preform during clamping. USE/ADVANTAGE - For holding glass preforms used for optical fibre prodn., prior to coating by vapour deposition. Glass tube is centrally and uniformly clamped around the main axis.
