Biochemical prodn of D-(-)-mandelic acid comprises the enzymic redn of an alkali metal benzoylformate (phenylglyoxalate) in the presence of Enterococcus faecalis (DSM 20,371) and glucosee at pH 6-8, at temps 20-40 deg C; and recovery of D-(-)-mandelic acid by adsorption on active charcoal or an ion exchange resin, sepn of the solid phase, and elution. Pref the some baker's yeast is added to the fermentation mixt. USE - The prod is a chiral intermediate for drugs and antibiotics, and is also an optically active acid for the resolution of optical racemates.
