Aq. dispersions contg. natural rubber and thermoplastic polymer - with polymer based on styrene polymethacrylic acid alkyl ester(s) and vinyl ester useful in mfr. of coatings and binders for organic fibre

Aq. dispersions (I) contg. (1) 50-99.9 pref. 80-99 wt.% natural rubber and (2) 0.1-50 pref. 1-20 wt.% thermoplastic polymer. Polymer (2) is selected from: (a) styrene polymers contg. at least 10 wt.% styrene units; (b) polymethacrylic acid 1-4C alkyl esters contg. at least 90.5 wt.% methacrylic acid alkyl ester units; (c) vinyl ester polymers contg. 10-50 wt.% vinylester units; and has an ave. particle dia. also of 0.5-2.5 pref. 0.5-1.5 microns. Coagulants and vulcanisers produced from (1) are also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used in the manufacture of impregnators, coatings, and laminates of fabric and paper, as binders for animal, plant and synthetic fibres, in the modification of bitumous masses for road surfaces, adhesives and seals. Products manufactured using (I) have higher tear strength, higher elongation and good ageing resistance.
