New polymers (I) contg. ammonium and polyoxyalkylene gps. are obtd. by (a) transesterifying 1-8C alkyl acrylate polymers (II) with tert. alkanol amines (III) and polyoxyalkylene alcohols (IV) at 70-170 deg. C in a transesterification catalyst and a solvent, using a (III:(IV) molar ratio of 1:9 - 9:1, so 10-70% of the ester gps. are transesterified; and (b) reacting the prods. with carboxylic acids or R6- X (R6 = 1-4C alkyl or benzyl; and X = halogen) at 20-140 deg. C, opt. under pressure. (II) are prepd. by radical polymerisation, opt. with up to 50% of the acrylate ester replaced by the corresp. methacrylate ester. (III) are of formula (IIA) or (IIIB): R1 = (CH2)q, CH-R4-CH2 or (CnH2n-O)m-Cp-H2-p; R4 = 1-16C alkyl; m = 1-20; n, p and q = 2-4; and R2 and R3 = 1-18C alkyl. (IV) are of formula R5-O(Cr-H2-r-O)sH (IVA): R5 = 1-6C alkyl; r = 2-4, with an average value of 2-2.5; and s = 5-200. 20-50% of the alkyl ester gps. are transesterified. The (III):(VI) molar ratio is 1:3 - 3:1. (IV) has R5 = 1-4C alkyl and r = 2-2.3. Step (b) is effected with a 4-8C carboxylic acid. USE - (I) are useful as emulsifiers for preparing aq. emulsions of mould release agents, esp. for use in the mfr. of mouldings based on opt. fibre- or textile reinforced curable resins (claimed), and for preparing printing ink emulsions and textile antistatic compsns.
