Pressed article for sustained pharmaceutical release - contg. poly-lactic acid and polymer of D-3-hydroxybutyric acid, providing good flow properties and easy compression

Pressed article with delayed release of pharmaceutically active ingredient (I), for oral or parenteral application, contains solid(s) (I); polylactic acid (II) and a homo- or copolymer (A) of D(-)-3-hydroxybutyric acid (III). Pref. (II) has mol.wt. 3000-150000 and (A) mol.wt. 50000-80000. The wt. ratio (II):(A) is 10:90-90:10 and (I) is 5-80 wt.% of the compsn. USE/ADVANTAGE - Addn. of (A) makes (II) easier to compress while the (A) component in the blend decomposes more rapidly in vivo than pure (A). The (II)-(A) mix has good flow properties and can be compressed without auxiliaries. The release rate of (I) can be controlled by varying the (I): polymer ratio; (II):(A) ratio; polymer mol.wt., particle size of components and the method of prepn.
