4(2(3-Amino- 5,5-dimethyl) cyclohexyl) ethylbenzoic acid of formula (I) is a new cpd. (I) are prepd. from 4(2(3-oxo-5,5-dimethyl)cyclohexen-1-yl))ethenylbenzoic acid or a salt of formula (II) by (a) aminating hydrogenation in alcoholic soln. in presence of NH3, H2 and a hydrogenation catalyst, at 50-300 deg.C. and total pressure 50-400 bars, at a molar ratio of NH3:(II) of 5-100:1, (b) removal of excess NH3, (c) dilution with water, (d) acidification to pH below 2 at the b.pt., (e) removal of the residue contg. by-prods., (f) bringing the filtrate to pH 5-6 with a base, and (g) isolating (I). Or, hydrogenation may be first with H2 only, at 50-200 deg.C. and 5-100 bars, followed by release of the pressure, addn. of 5-100x the amt. of NH3 w.r.t. (II), at 50-200 deg.C. and autogenous pressure, and pressing in H2 at 50-400 bars and 100-300 deg.C.. X = H or alkali metal. USE - (I) is a monomer for polycondensate.
