A penetrator (1) for an impact round, built as a bundle of heavy metal wire (4) has a matrix (5) filled with a polymer resin e.g, epoxy resin, methacrylate or polyurethane. The wires are of a relatively high strength tungsten or tantalum or their alloys with coating material. The casing (3) of an impact penetrator round (1) is filled with a bundle of double coated heavy metal wires (4). A first coating (10) has good bonding properties and good tear resistance and completely encompasses the wires (4). The second coating (11) forms the previously coated heavy metal wires (4) to a high strength fibre bundle (2). Material for the first coating is a modified silicon or epoxy resin, the second coating is of modified epoxy resin. This second coating may be made to form a hexagonal cross section around the coated wires (4). The whole matrix is mounted in the casing (3) with adhesive. USE/ADVANTAGE - Ammunition mfr. Lower cost and greater strength. The damping properties of the first coating give improved performance when striking a target, esp. when the target is struck at an angle. Avoids metal forming and subsequent heat treatment operations in mfr.
