The arrangement has a r (18) at the end of the pipe (7). A cutting shoe is attached to the pipe and carries the transmitter (14) and a voltage supply (27). The transmitter and voltage supply are located in a casing (14) which is attached inside the pipe via radial struts (20). The casing is tubular and has an internal chamber closed at one end. The transmitter is at the centre of the pipe (7) and projects from it. The internal chamber (17) has slits (42) open to the outside. These slits are closed by an abrasion resisting synthetic material. The transmitter and/or its power supply are spring mounted. USE/ADVANTAGE - Monitors direction in which pipe is inserted into ground (by drilling horizontally).
