Clarified sewage sludge or other waste material contg. carbon or other combustive prods. is vitrified after burning above a bath of molten glass into which the ashes drop for incorporation. Burning takes place in an upper furnace section formed as a cyclone and tangentially receiving hot combustion air after preheating by furnace discharge fumes. The necessary combustion temp. is maintained by radiation from the glass bath. Heater electrodes for the bath produce a central energy concn. resulting in upward glass flow. Sludge etc is predried before injection. ADVANTAGE - Less predrying of waste is needed, no ash is produced for tipping and vitrified prod. is useful.
