The high pressure fuel injection pump for a diesel engine has a piston (3) which can be moved axially and can be rotated in a cylinder (2). The piston (3) has control edges (4,5) which control the beginning and ending of the fuel delivery phase. An annular suction and return flow chamber (6) is formed between the outer wall of the cylinder (2) and the inner wall of the housing (1). This chamber (6) is connected to the interior of the cylinder (2) by radial holes (7). The volume of the annular chamber (6) is initially reduced by spring-loaded pistons (12) which project into the chamber (6). These pistons ensure a rapid build-up of pressure in the chamber to a level which is greater than the vapour pressure of the fuel. USE - Fuel injection pump for diesel engine.
