The method determines the position of the neutral chord in continuous bands by placing a band (3) under test on two discs (1, 2). The instantaneous transmission ratio of the arrangement is determined and compared with a theoretical formulation of the transmission ratio which is dependent on the position of the neutral chord. The distance of the neutral chord from the surface is determined along the band from the comparison. A signal is produced for each circulation of the band by a sensor which detects a mark on the hand. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. determining position from surface of neutral chord of bands of inhomogeneous construction such as drive belts.
