A very safe method of motor vehicle operation involves repeatedly checking functionality of at least one vehicle sensor. When a sensor failure is detected, an artificial emergency function is started and maintained until sensor functionality is restored. For sensors which generate a min. signal, for a min. measured parameter value, identical to the signal of a failed sensor, a first artificial emergency function is started immediately the min. signal occurs and a check is performed of whether the sensor is operating. ADVANTAGE - Enables reliable checking of sensors with ambiguous min/failure signals.
