Signals from a controller (10) to a group of controlled devices (16), and from supervisory sensors (17) of their states to the controller (10), are transmitted through a bidirectional system using a single common data signal line (D). A transmit-receive timing controller (13) connected to this line (D) incorporates an oscillator (131), a timer (132) producing a clock pulse and starting signal, and circuits for timer setting (133) and checking (134). ADVANTAGE - Control and supervisory signals can be conveyed by single line. System is easily reconfigurable for addn. or removal of controlled devices and/or sensors. @(29pp
