Disc brake for motor vehicle - has brake pads which are made from materials with different friction characteristics

The disc brake has a disc (10) and two brake pads (12, 14) which operate on opposite sides (18, 16) of the disc. The brake disc and the brake pads are each made of different materials. The co-efficients of friction between each pad and the disc reaches a maximum at a defined temperature for each pad and then diminishes. The materials of the disc and for each of the brake pads are so chosen that the maximum co-efficient of friction between one pad and the brake disc is reached at a lower temperature than the temperature of maximum friction for the other pad. In this way, the effective braking force remains sensibly constant over a wide range of temperature. USE - Motor vehicle brakes and friction clutches.
