The jet engine for aircraft propulsion has a thrust nozzle which extends from the high temp. combustion chamber. For subsonic flight the combustion chamber is supplied with compressed air by a shaft-driven axial flow air compressor. In the modified engine the compressed' air is supplied by a number of free piston compressors (7a) which are arranged in a ring around a central combustion chamber (1) and thrust nozzle (4). The compressors (7a) are mounted in a housing (6) which can be rotated about the engine longitudinal axis to bring each compressor to the lowest position for ease of servicing.
