Composite steel and plastics panel - are for motor vehicle bodywork and have all-steel edges to facilitate welding to bodywork

Part of the bodywork of a motor vehicle is constructed from composite panels formed by two layers of sheet steel with an intermediate layer of plastics sheet in order to provide acoustic damping. A component which has to be welded to an all steel part of the body, is made from a rectangular panel (1) of composite material. Steel strips (2, 3, 4, 5) are welded all around the edges (7) of the panel (1) by a laser beam. A blank (6) is then stamped out of the sheet with the edges of the blank lying in the welded-on steel strips. The blank is then pressed to its required shape to produce a component with all steel edges so that it is easily welded to the vehicle bodywork.
