Prepn. of monomer building blocks (I) comprises reacting esters of fatty acids contg. ester hydroxyl gps., or esters or salts of fatty acids contg. amino gps. either alone or as a mixt. with suitable bifunctional cpds. which are capable of reacting with hydroxyl or amino gps. esp. on the addn. of catalysts and in a suitable solvent. Two moles of such fatty acid esters, whose fatty acid gps. can be identical or different, are coupled with each other via the hydroxyl or amino gps. by means of the bifunctional cpd. The use of (I) is the mfr. of polymers by coupling via the carbonyl function using suitable bifunctional gps. in the usual way is also claimed. The esters of fatty acids contg. hydroxyl- or amino gps. are methyl or ethyl esters. The bifunctional cpds. are diisocyanates or activated dicarboxylic acid derivs. The bifunctional cpds. used in the polymer prepn. are diamines, polyamines, aminoalcohols, diols or polyols. The monomers are cleaved in the usual manner to produce the free hydroxy- or amino fatty acids. ADVANTAGE - This prepn. selectively removes functionalised fatty acids and their derivs. from fatty acid mixts. in which the fatty acid contact is relatively low. The use of the monomers offers a variation in the props. of the synthetic materials formed.
