Method of producing pockets in circumference of rings - uses superimposed rotary motions of work and single point tool to generate cycloidal tool path

The pockets are produced with a combination of rotary motions of the work and a single-point tool in a monner similar to polygon turning. The workpiece cutter rotates about the axis (13). The tool (9) rotates about a parallel axis at the end of an arm (10) which itself rotates about a parallel axis (14) in a machine slide (12); the motion of the tool is therefore cycloidal. The slide can be fed along the axis of the work and the distance e between axes (13) and (14) can be varied. The tool is fed into the ring from the inside or, depending on the required geometry, from the outside. The number of pockets machined out is a fraction of the ratio of work speed to tool speed. USE/ADVANTAGE- Bearing case prodn. Rapid machining and good surface finish. Slightly flexible.
