The method involves generating relative motions between a milling tool (3) and a pre-toothed workpiece (2) using drive motors (8, 46). Contacts of two sets of tooth flanks are detected by measuring motor size of the drive motors, and relative motions between the milling tool and pre-toothed workpiece are produced. The milling tool is centered relative to the pre-toothed workpiece based on the determined relative motions using one of the drive motors such that distances between the tooth flanks satisfy specified conditions. An independent claim is also included for a machine tool for processing a pre-toothed workpiece.
