A bottom electrode is claimed for a glass melting furnace having two or more other electrodes, located in the furnace interior and extending into the melt for heating the melt, esp. a glass melt with highly radioactive addns, to its electrically conductive temp. range. The novelty is that (a) bottom electrode (16) forms part of the tapping device and has a tapping channel (18); (b) the bottom electrode (16) has a funnel-shaped entry face with an upwardly extending conical bulge (20) at its base; (c) the tapping channel (18) begins at the tip of the bulge (20) and has a conical inlet opening (19) and (d) one or more channels extend radially inwardly and/or downwardly from the bottom of the bulge (20) to the tapping channel (18) and have a cross-sectional area which is pref. less than that of the tapping channel. Pref. the bottom electrode (16) is located above and electrically isolated from an inductively heated metallic tapping nozzle by ceramic bricks, e.g. a taphole brick. ADVANTAGE-The temp. in the tapping channel and at the furnace bottom can be increased for continuous remelting of any solidified glass so that taphole blockages are avoided.
