Removal of cyanides dissolved in groundwater comprises pumping the water from a source well (3) to the surface where it is enriched with oxygen and nutrients then returned to the soil through at least one fixed bed filter (7). Pref. the water is enriched with N- and/or P-contg. nutrients, esp. Na2HPO4 and is returned via a gravel filter. Both enrichment with nutrients and filtration are done under reduced pressure (esp. 1-5 bars). USE/ADVANTAGE - This process provides optimum conditions for growth of cyanide degrading bacteria, so that cyanide elimination is achieved more quickly while retaining the economic advantages of the recirculation method. It has no adverse effect on the ability of microorganisms to degrade hydrocarbons and no addn. of cultured bacteria is necessary. The method is esp. used to process water from the sites of gasworks and coke ovens.
