The alloy has a compsn. ReBxMy in which Re stands for a Rare Earth element or Alkaline Earth element, B represents Boron and M is at least one element from the gp.: Ni, Co, Mn, Al, Cr, Fe, Cu, Sn, Sb, Mo, V, Nb, Ta, Zn, Zr and Ti. The value of x is pref. 0.005-0.1, esp. 0.015-0.1, and of y pref. 3.5-6.0. The alloy pref. contains a hydride which has an equilibrium pressure at 40 deg.C or 0.05-5 atm. Esp. claimed are alloys contg. Co and/or Al, respectively, Co and/or Mn or Co together with Al or Mn and either Mo, Zr or Cr. The alloy features 2 or more metal-cpds. of which the main cpd. has the compsn. ReM and the ancillary phase contains at least B, pref. with an element of the Group IVA, VA or VIA of the Periodic System.
