An arrangement for detecting motor winding defects applies (13) a.c. voltages to each motor winding and to an iron core to induce a partial discharge. A partial discharge tester (1) measures the partial discharges via each winding to the core when the voltage is applied. Defects are detected by checking (5) for a steep rise in the tester's output signal when the a.c. voltage is applied. A defect signal is generated when a steep rise is detected.
