The invention relates to a press having straight uprights which comprises a base 15 a press ram 25 fitted with motor means, a conventional die stamping assembly and an apparatus for conveying a strip of material onto the dies. According to the invention, the conventional die stamping assembly is dismantled and is replaced by a transfer apparatus which comprises an upper sole plate 33 carrying punching dies 59, fixed to the press ram, and a lower sole plate 31 carrying dies 51 and fitted with a substructure plate 41 which is fixed to the base. Sliding longitudinal bars 91 fitted with piece-grasping fingers 93 are mounted onto the lower sole plate on both sides of the dies and are coupled to a translation device which moves them intermittently in a to and fro fashion in order to move the pieces between the stations after each die stamping operation.
