The present invention relates to the separation of the two isomers, characterized by the fact that it is condensed selectively one of them with a product having at least one aryl and hydrogen in the presence of a friedel-crafts catalyst, ii and that is separated from the condensation product obtained from the other isomer. In a mixture of phenyl - 1 bromo - 2 ethane and phenyl - 1 bromo - 1, only the latter is condensed with xylene in the presence of ferric chloride to give the phenylxylylethane.
