Data processing device for selecting data words contained in a dictionary that are closest to a data word to be processed according to a matching criterion. BR/ The device comprises: BR/ - first means for meshing the space containing all the data words of the dictionary, BR/ - second means for generating for each mesh -dictionaries by matching, according to said matching criterion, any mesh with words of a sub-dictionary, BR/ - third means for exploiting the sub-dictionaries by determining, for each word of any data to processing, the mesh to which it belongs, then by determining, according to said criterion of correspondence among the words of the sub-dictionary assigned to said mesh, the one (s) which best corresponds to said any word of data to be processed. BR/ The mesh can be realized by a network of neurons in layers or in tree. The device can be used for information compression or data classification.
