Advantage is taken of the sluggishness of the human visual apparatus if, during each complete revolution of the image carrier through 360°, the total time of all bright phases is at least 30%, preferably at least 50%, in particular at least 70%, of the time of a revolution of the image carrier, and/or if the frequency of the bright phases is at least 200 Hz, the bright phases preferably emitting at least 75%, in particular at least 90%, of the maximum luminous intensity.
