Glass having ultrafine particles of CuCl and/or CuBr precipitated therein, which consists essentially of:PP from 10 to 70 mol % of SiO.sub.2,PPfrom 30 to 90 mol % of B.sub.2 O.sub. 3,PPfrom 0.1 to 50 mol % of Li.sub.2 O+Na. sub.2 O+K.sub.2 O, andPPfrom 0.01 to 10 mol % of CuCl+ CuBr.P PThe glass may further contain from 0.01 to 40 mol % of Al.sub.2 O. sub.3.
