PURPOSE:To improve the balance of two characteristics, which are strength and thermal impact resistance, of a reaction sintering Si3N4-BN sintered compact, although it is difficult to simultaneously satisfy the requirements for both of these characteristics because the thermal impact resistance is improved with increase in BN amt. while the strength decreases therewith. CONSTITUTION:Plural Si-BN compounded materials having different compounding amts. of BN are laminated so that at least the front and back surfaces have different compounding compsn., and the laminated body is sintered in a nitrogen-contg. atmosphere. Thus, the obtd. sintered compact has good balance as a whole structure since a material excellent in thermal impact strength is provided in the surface where thermal impact is to be given, while a material excellent is strength is provided on the opposite side.
